‘Nobody supports me,’ Karan Johar crumbles under pressure, quits MAMI

The death of Sushant Singh Rajput by suicide has resulted in a lot of tectonic activity in Bollywood. While some star kids with absolutely no skill sets have come out and arrogantly proclaimed themselves as proud dynasts in the industry, others have withdrawn themselves into anonymity. Karan Johar is one such person. Reports suggest that the producer has now resigned from the MAMI (Mumbai Academy of Moving Image) annual film festival. Such a drastic decision by Johar comes in the backdrop of the producer receiving massive flak on social media for being the hypocrite that he is.

According to a report, Karan has already sent in his resignation to the director of the annual film festival, Smriti Kiran. Mumbai Film Festival is an International film festival held in Mumbai each year. Organized by MAMI, the festival previews new films of all genres from around the world with a range of competitions and showcase categories.

Karan Johar unfollowed almost every film actor on Twitter. His current following count stands at 8, and he now follows only three actors – Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan. He also only follows Narendra Modi, while the other handles belong to his production house.

Karan Johar has been dealt a severe blow by the public this time. His arrogance and sense of untouchability towards outsiders had been going unfettered for far too long. It seems he has now realised the disaster of an individual he is, and is perhaps now rethinking his role in the industry.

Sushant Singh Rajput Made A Promise To Dil Bechara Director Mukesh Chhabra

Late actor Sushant Singh Rajput once made a promise to casting director Mukesh Chhabra and he stood by his words. The actor had promised to work with Mukesh in his first directorial venture and so he did in his last project Dil Bechara. An emotional Mukesh Chhabra, who makes his Bollywood debut as a director with the film, shared a post remembering Sushant Singh Rajput, who was not just his film's lead actor, he was also "a dear friend." Sharing the news of the film's release on July 24 on Disney+Hotstar, Mukesh Chhabra wrote: "Sushant was not just the hero of my debut film as a director but he was a dear friend who stood by me through thick and thin. We had been close right from Kai Po Che! (Sushant's debut film) to Dil Bechara. He had promised me that he would be in my first film. So many plans were made together, so many dreams were dreamt together but I never imagined that I would be releasing this film without him."
The film, which will be releasing on an OTT platform, will be available to all subscribers as well as non-subscribers, Mukesh Chhabra revealed in his post. "There can be no better way to celebrate him and his talent. He always showered immense love on me while I was making it and his love will guide us as we release it. And I'm glad that the Producers have made it available for everyone to watch. We are going to love and celebrate you my friend. I can visualise you with your beautiful smile blessing us from up above. Love you," he wrote.

Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt lose lakhs of Instagram followers as Sushant fans call out ‘nepotism’

Kangana Ranaut, who has often raised the nepotism issue and claimed that it works to the detriment of outsiders in Bollywood, has gained lakhs of Instagram followers.

Johar and Bhatt are both children of successful Bollywood film-makers — Yash Johar and Mahesh Bhatt. Rajput’s alleged suicide is seen by many fans as his reaction to a concerted effort by the Bollywood “insider lobby”, including the likes of Johar, to outcast the actor, a former TV star from Patna who won many accolades for his powerful performances in movies like Dhoni and Kai Po Che.

Rajput, who allegedly hanged himself at his Bandra residence last Sunday, is not believed to have left behind a suicide note. He was 34.

In the week since Rajput’s alleged suicide, Johar has been unfollowed by more than 5 lakh users on Instagram, where his following has shrunk to 1.05 crore (10.5 million) from 1.11 crore (11 million). 

Bhatt has been unfollowed by 10 lakh users since Sunday, with her Instagram follower list now down to 4.74 crore (47.4 million) from 4.88 crore (48.8 million). 

Both Johar and Bhatt also sought to express grief for Rajput by posting photos of him on social media. While Johar’s Instagram tribute was accompanied by a photo of him with Rajput and an emotional message, Bhatt just posted a photo of the Kai Po Che actor with a heart emoji.

In a message that appeared to refer to Rajput’s reported depression diagnosis, Johar said, “I blame myself for not being in touch with you for the past year… I have felt at times like you may have needed people to share your life with… but somehow I never followed up on that feeling… will never make that mistake again…”

However, both Johar and Bhatt were incessantly trolled in the comments to the posts. The commenters specifically called out Johar for what is seen as his penchant for working with star kids.

As a result of the trolling, Johar has reportedly stopped following several actors like Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Twinkle Khanna — all star kids and friends of the film-maker — on Twitter. Now, he only follows eight Twitter accounts, including that of Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Dharma Productions and PM Modi.

Ranaut, another small-town import with no Bollywood roots, has posted two videos since Rajput’s death that seek to call out nepotism and even the alleged hounding of outsiders like her by the news media.

With millions watching the videos — the first video has so far recorded 2 crore views — her Instagram following has increased by about 20 lakh (2 million) followers to 48 lakh (4.8 million).

Sushant Singh Rajput’s death has deeply impacted, Social media has been taken by storm after it was discovered that he was suffering from clinical depression. Also, people are slamming Bollywood to contribute to his suicide. The whole “nepotism” debate is back on table and the ‘blame-game’ is on. But amidst all this, police are interrogating the ‘professional rivalry’ angle.

Recently, rumoured girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty was summoned for 9 hours by police as she was living with Sushant at his rented Bandra penthouse. She was accompanied by her father.
A source revealed some important inside information from this interrogation session with Rhea to Pinkvilla. The source said, “In the last few months, the person who was the closest to Sushant was Rhea and they were together almost all the time. Police decided to call her first today.”

Sushant and Rhea were in a relationship but the couple never accepted nor they denied the rumours about them. While the source revealed that they were planning to get married by the end of this year; in the interrogation session, Rhea was asked to show every text message exchanged between the two. According to Pinkvilla, “Rhea was asked to show all the text messages exchanged between the two. Her entire phone was scanned, including all their pictures and videos together. Rhea spoke about living in with Sushant and also revealed that they were planning to buy a property as well, as revealed by their broker previously. She admitted that they did plan to get married by the end of 2020,” the source adds.

Rhea and Sushant had grown close towards each other in this lockdown, but days before the actor took this drastic step, Rhea moved out from the house with her bags which indicated their breakup following some problems in the relationship. 

Before Sushant decided to end his life, he called Rhea a night before but she didn’t pick the calls. He also called his Pavitra Rishta co-star Mahesh Shetty, who also didn’t pick the call. The call records suggested, “Rhea happens to be the last person Sushant dialed before going to sleep. The actor called Mahesh Shetty first who didn’t answer and then called Rhea who also didn’t pick up the call. He went to sleep, woke up and saw Mahesh had returned the call. He called him back but it didn’t get connected.”

In the last few months, Sushant was diagnosed with clinical depression and Rhea was the only one to be with him. According to the same report, “Police asked her about his behavioural changes that she noticed. She not only spoke about it but apparently showed proof that proved how he was undergoing treatment for clinical depression. Sushant had turned towards meditation and yoga to maintain his well-being. She also told police that there would be days when he would feel extremely low and upset. She also shared that he would refuse to take his medication and she tried to coax him to take them but to no avail.”

There were some reports doing rounds that before Sushant’s demise, Mahesh Bhatt asked Rhea to vacate the house and leave Sushant when she told him that Sushant was behaving weird as he was talking to himself and hearing voices. But it’s unknown if this particular point was addressed in the interrogation.
Although Rhea was accompanied by her father to the police station, her father was not allowed to be in the interrogation session with Rhea. The same report suggested, “The police questioned her about everything and her father wasn’t allowed to be present while she was being interrogated.”

Police are now analysing Rhea’s statement and their investigation is still going on and they are planning to make some more calls to those people who were close to Sushant.

When Ayushmann Khurrana was rejected by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions in 2007

My Journey in Bollywood -- in which he recalled being rejected by filmmaker Karan Johar in 2007, is going viral, after the suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput sparked a renewed conversation around nepotism in the film industry.

Ayushmann recalled that one of the first Bollywood personalities that he interviewed back when he was a radio jockey was Karan. At an awards show in 2007, Ayushmann asked Karan for his number and told him that he wanted to be an actor.

“Karan gave me the landline number to his office when I met him. I should have taken a hint there and then. But I was so excited! I even planned exactly when I would make the call: sometime around 11:30 am, so he’d be done with breakfast and available to talk.”

Ayushmann continued, “The next day I dialled the number they’d given me. They said Karan wasn’t in office. The day after that I called again. They said he was busy. And finally, my bubble burst when, the subsequent day, they told me bluntly ‘We only work with stars, and can’t work with you’.”

Ayushmann had, in fact, become a star. And the actor chose to tell him this story. “You gave me a landline number. The next morning, when I called the number and asked to speak to Karan Johar, the person on the other line said, ‘We don’t audition outsiders and newcomers’ or something like that.”

Karan replied, “I gave you the right number. That was very sweet of me! I must’ve thought that you have potential.” Ayushmann responded by saying that the goal was to reach him, which didn’t happen.

In a fiery public service announcement made on her official fan-handle, the actress came out strongly against the Bollywood film industry for not giving the actor his dues. She also slammed the media for projecting the actor’s “weak mind” as the reason for his death by suicide.

“If celebrities are struggling with personal and mental health issues, the media fshould try and emphasize with them, rather than making it difficult for them,” read the caption of the video post.

Sushant Singh Rajput death: Akshay Kumar says, he is ‘shocked and speechless’

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging at his Mumbai residence on Sunday. He was 34. It is a case of suspected suicide.

Sushant’s colleagues from the film industry paid tributes to him with social media posts. Actor Akshay Kumar tweeted, “Honestly this news has left me shocked and speechless...I remember watching #SushantSinghRajput in Chhichhore and telling my friend Sajid, its producer how much I’d enjoyed the film and wish I’d been a part of it. Such a talented actor...may God give strength to his family."

Actor Riteish Deshmukh wrote, “Shocked beyond words !!!! #SushantSinghRajput no more .... deeply saddened!!” Shilpa Shetty’s husband and businessman Raj Kundra tweeted, “In complete shock! #RIP.”

Actor Aftab Shivdasani wrote, “Sushant nooo!! that’s the most disturbing news!!! so so so sad.. why? Why end such a young and beautiful life that too suicide??!! So so heartbroken.. #sushantsinghrajput.”

Sushant was a popular face on television and starred in the show Pavitra Rishta before he made a successful transition to films. He made his Bollywood debut with Kai Po Che in 2013. He has also starred in films such as PK, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Kedarnath and Sonchiriya.

Abhishek Bachchan & Ileana D'Cruz starrer The Big Bull being readied for a digital release

Abhishek was supposed to make his digital debut with the second season of Breathe, we now hear that it will happen sooner than we thought of. Yes, The Big Bull, starring him and Ileana D'Cruz will now be released on the web. A source tells us, "Ajay Devgn, who's producing The Big Bull - a biopic on the life of stock market king Harshad Mehta - has been in regular touch with the whole production crew. They are also in talks with a few OTT platforms who have shown interest in buying the film. In all probabilities, Ajay and team will avoid a theatrical release and put The Big Bull online. They are waiting to close the deal, and will sell it to the digital agency that gives them a bigger price."

Abhishek and Ileana also seem completely fine with the idea. "Given the situation around, it's still uncertain when theatres will resume filming movies. So, Ajay, Abhishek, Ileana, the director Kookie Gulati they all came to a collective decision along with the team to release their film on the web instead. The production house will also recover its investment from the same and the satellite prices too are being negotiated currently."

John Abraham-Emraan Hashmi's Mumbai Saga, Ranbir Kapoor-Sanjay Dutt's Shamshera to Resume Shooting

Shooting schedules and release dates of a number of films got hit during the nationwide lockdown. Sanjay Gupta's gangsterdrama, Mumbai Saga, starring John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi, was almost complete and looking at a June release when it had to hit pause mode.

The team was shooting an action-packed confrontation at a real location in Mumbai when the lockdown was announced. The film, produced by Bhushan Kumar and Anuradha Gupta, is going to be among the first films to resume shooting next month, reported Mumbai Mirror.

After getting a go-ahead from the Telangana government in-sync with the guidelines prescribed by the Producers Guild of India and the state, Gupta will be shooting the remaining portions in Hyderabad.

"We are planning to shoot in Ramoji Rao Film City as they have all the facilities and equipment required, including an in-house crew and technical staff, along with hotels for the team from Mumbai. It's all contained within the studio premises and that cuts down on the risk," Gupta confirmed.

On the other hand, Sanjay Dutt and Ranbir Kapoor, who have approximately four days' patchwork left on their ambitious period drama, Shamshera, will also be returning to sets soon. A source informed Mid-day that the film's principal shoot was complete when the lockdown was announced. Director Karan Malhotra and his team began the post-production work during the lockdown.

"Karan and Yash Raj Films' head honcho Aditya Chopra have decided to film the remaining portion inside the YRF studio with limited crew, keeping the logistics and safety precautions in mind. The shoot dates have yet to be determined as the makers are awaiting an approval from the Producers' Guild. They have also sought the permission of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees to enable daily wagers to resume work on the project," the source said.
